Neurohemodynamics of pulmonary edema. IV. Effect of systemic vasoconstriction and subsequent vasodilation on flow and pressures in systemic and pulmonary vascular beds.

چکیده
T HE INFLUENCE of the tone of peripheral blood vessels on pulmonary vascular hemodynamics has been shown to be considerable. That is, sympathetic impulses to the peripheral vascular bed are capable of causing a striking rise in pulmonary vascular pressures even in the absence of pulmonary innervation (1-3) and also of causing a grossly observable increase of pulmonary blood volume (4). Conversely, it was found that blockade of sympathetic impulses to the systemic vascu lar bed produced a prompt decrease in pulmonary vascular pressures when the latter were initially elevated and also caused a decrease in pulmonary bl .ood volume ( 1-4). The data to be presented below were gathered in order to define more completely the hemodynamic changes that occur when the intracisternal injection of ‘fibrin’ is followed by elevations of systemic and pulmonary vascular pressures in the dog.

متن کاملInteraction between prostanoids and nitric oxide in regulation of systemic, pulmonary, and coronary vascular tone in exercising swine.
Prostacyclin and nitric oxide (NO) are produced by the endothelium in response to physical forces such as shear stress. Consequently, both NO and prostacyclin may increase during exercise and contribute to metabolic vasodilation. Conversely, NO has been hypothesized to inhibit prostacyclin production. We therefore investigated the effect of cyclooxygenase (COX) inhibition on exercise-induced va...
متن کاملTHE EFFECTS OF CAPTOPRIL ON PULMONARY AND SYS TEMIC ARTERIAL PRESSURES IN HIGHALTITUDE PULMONARY HYPERTENSION
The purpose of this investigation was to assess the effect of captopril on both systemic (P.a) and pulmonary arterial pressures (PPA) in patients with high-altitude pulmonary hypertension (HAPH). Seventeen patients (mean age 44±6.8 years) with HAPH and mild to moderate systemic arterial hypertension were included in the study. All patients underwent right heart catheterization with measurem...
متن کاملPulmonary vascular effects of prostaglandin D2, but not its systemic vascular or airway effects, are mediated through thromboxane receptor activation.
Prostaglandin D2 (PGD2) can cause pulmonary vasoconstriction or vasodilation depending on animal species and age. Because the constrictor effects of PGD2 in some vascular beds may be mediated through thromboxane receptors, the purpose of this study was to determine whether the vascular or bronchial effects of PGD2 are mediated through thromboxane/endoperoxide (TX/E) receptor activation. In chro...
متن کاملAdrenergic control of the cardiovascular system in the turtle Trachemys scripta.
Freshwater turtles, Trachemys scripta, like all non-crocodilian reptiles, are able to shunt blood between the pulmonary and systemic circulations owing to their undivided ventricle. The prevailing hypothesis is that the ratio of pulmonary and systemic resistances is the primary determinant of cardiac shunting in turtles. In the present study, we have examined the adrenergic influences on vascul...
